Wood Upcycling

Did you know that the amount of wood waste generated in 2016 (537,000 tonnes) was 43% more than the amount in 2015?

In Singapore, 530,700 tonnes of wood waste and 320,500 tonnes of horticultural waste was generated in 2016. The recycling rate is 78% for wood waste and 65% for horticultural (natural wood) waste. Though this is a pretty good effort, we can always do more to reduce waste! Wood waste includes pallets, crates, boxes, furniture and wooden planks for construction.

What’s more, wood can’t be thrown into the recycling bin as it requires special treatment to be recycled.

Although wood is a renewable resource, it needs to be conserved to sustain forests and protect the environment. You can help to reduce wood waste through upcycling!

Here's what you can do:

Wood waste is usually processed into wood chips for composting, cogeneration or to make new wooden products. Used wood pallets and crates can also be conditioned to made more useful.

Although you probably can’t upcycle wood at home (you need special equipment for that!) you can help to reduce wood waste by collecting old furniture and household wood products instead of throwing it away.

You can then bring them to a workshop at a wooden upcycling factory, where you can repurpose or refurbish your wood into something usable!
