Upcycling Food Waste
In 2017, NEA reported that Singapore wasted 791,000 tonnes of food. Fruit and vegetable scraps also contribute to this amount of food waste. Please do not throw these scraps or any type of food waste into the recycling bin! This will contaminate the recycling bin and cause all the items in the recycling bin to be thrown away.

Fruit and vegetable scraps can actually be turned into gold if one knows how to upcycle them! Some ways of upcycling fruit and vegetable scraps are to turn them into compost & Eco-enzyme.
What is Compost?
Compost is actually a good fertiliser that can help plants grow better. There are many different ways to compost and Up and Away focuses mainly on Vermicomposting. This means that the compost is made by using earthworms. Earthworms will eat these fruit and vegetable scraps and they pass through the earthworms' bodies before becoming compost.
What is Eco-enzyme?
Eco-enzyme is a cleaning liquid made from the fermentation of fruit and vegetable scraps, sugar and water. The ideal ratio to make this eco-enzyme is 10 parts water, 3 parts fruit and vegetable scraps and 1 part sugar. After a period of 3 months, the eco-enzyme will be ready and can be used to clean tables, mop floors and even to wash clothes!
