In layman's terms, composting can be seen as nature's way of recycling. But more specifically, it refers to the natural decomposition of organic materials (such as vegetable peels, fruit waste and coffee grounds) to produce compost, which are then used as fertilisers for growing of plants or crops.

In 2017, Singapore generated a total of 809,800 tonnes of food waste (NEA), out of which only 16% were recycled. While this marked an increase from 14% in the previous year, we can definitely still do much better. Such food waste which can't be avoided, should be recycled as much as possible. NParks do provide some basic guidelines on how to do DIY Composting at home, but for those who are new to the concept, this can be a daunting task.

The first step is probably the most difficult to take and to ease that transition, the team at Up & Away has compiled a list of sites to follow and clarify any doubts you might have!

This is a more generic group towards urban farming in our garden city. But with over 22,000 members, this is a much more populated community platform and you can expect daily videos, photos and stories from other users too, to see how useful compost can be.
